Follow barefoot Joel to identify a diversity of native wildflowers, including early onion, baby blue eyes, cobweb thistle, phacelia and other unique bloomers on the volcanic foothills of Orange! Get stunning macro and wide shots of the rich tapestry of shapes, colors and textures. Learn botany, plant identification and foraging skills. Treat it like a scavenger hunt and collect species on your phone using the iNaturalist app.
Stop frequently to cultivate a meaningful relationship with the plants and wildlife. Chance of observing rare and elusive birds, including cactus wren, gnatcatcher, roadrunner and quail. Full sun exposure. If it is a clear day, enjoy a panoramic view of the snowy mountains, Orange Heights project site, Catalina island and the Hollywood Sign at the highest point. Roughly 1-3 miles round trip, depending on interest of group. Few hundred feet of elevation gain. Carry plenty of water and lunch to enjoy along the way. Dirt single track trail features uneven and sections of steep terrain with loose rocks. It is not recommended for those with mobility issues or vertigo.
