The Issue

According to Sam.gov and The Independent, ICE is looking to expand their reach with new "flexible workspace (private offices and/or workstations) for assigned ICE personnel at approved coworking locations". This secret campaign to increase their presence in Border Towns is an intimidation tactic to scare residents and test to see what they can get away with.

Vermont and Canada have always had a relationship that embodies mutual respect and care, cultivated over generations. The Trump regime has harmed this relationship and thus the economic interdependence of border communities by imposing tariffs on Canadian goods and threatening to annex Canada (by calling it the 51st State). The regime is further abusing its power by:

  • Intimidating the Vermont Legislature as they work to correct Federal Overreach in South Burlington. "Border Czar Tom Homan visits Vermont following Dorset Street ICE operation"
  • Expanding its searches and seizures of people without the judicial warrants our Constitution requires.
  • Detaining tens of thousands of people without due process.
  • Building out mass ”detention facilities” that meet the definition of concentration camps
  • Refusing Congressional oversight of these places.

In recent years, Custom and Border Protection has expanded its foot print in Derby-Line/Newport, resulting in significant holdings in the Derby/Newport area. Since Donald Trump took office, ICE has gone from 10,000 Officers and Agents to 22,000, training was cut from 91 days to 47 days, and supplemental funding increased from $0, to $75,000,000,000. As they attempt to expand their operationsthroughout the US, we Vermonters have a duty to say that enough is enough.

We do not want more ICE in Derby or Newport, Vermont!

We explicitly reject any long-term base for or presence of ICE in our communities, including data centers supporting ICE operations and concentration camps* where people will be illegally held.

*As defined by Merriam Webster, a concentration camp is a place where large numbers of people (such as prisoners of war, political prisoners, refugees, or the members of an ethnic or religious minority) are detained or confined under armed guard minority) are detained or confined under armed guard —used especially in reference to campscreated by the Nazis
