No Mow Spring/Summer Reigate Council

No Mow Spring/Summer Reigate Council
The Issue
A petition to ask the council to avoid cutting grass areas that aren’t a danger to motorist and aren’t being used for football etc. Such as commons. Between the months of Feb/Oct with the exception of mowing walkway through and small areas for recreation. As we know insect numbers have declined as much as 60% in the last twenty years and there is a current decline of 2.5% per year due to a number of factors but this little gesture I’m sure can go a long way for doing our bit..
Benefits:
Reduced cost to the council - the grass would only need one cut in Oct which would mean saving money on staff, mowing equipment maintenance etc.
Allowing the grass to grow means Heaps more biodiversity: Allowing wildflowers to flourish will mean more food for birds, bees, butterflies and other beneficial wildlife that in decline.
We will be one of the first councils to do it which will look great for this community
Doing our bit to help the decline of insects
Lastly, we will have so much more wildlife to enjoy on our doorsteps, seeing bees buzzing and butterflies.. flying? Will no doubt better peoples mental health!
I hope these short points are enough to see the benefits to both the council and the residents.
