No More Stolen Childhoods: Ending Child Exploitation on Social Media and Reality TV

The Issue

Hi everyone,

I've noticed in the last few years a rise in stories about children of social media influencers and reality tv stars discussing the exploitation they endured as children and young adults due to their parents maltreatment. The majority of the children speaking out are in their mid to late twenties (or older) meaning there are two whole generations who have yet to speak out on these issues. In these generations (Gen Z and Gen Alpha) this form of exploitation is far more prevalent, and many of these children are still vulnerable to this day. Not to mention, the generations to come. There is only a few states that mandate compensation for children who participate in social media, one of which (California) influencers are actively leaving to avoid the legislation. and Coogan Laws unfortunately do not protect children forced to participate in reality tv. These children's precious, developing years are spread to the masses. Every personal moment, many embarassing, or vulnerable to predators, posted to the internet for a quick buck, remaining long into their adult lives. I firmly believe, this type of exploitation is utterly disgusting, and instead of just demanding compensation, these practices should be outlawed. By signing this petition you are agreeing that:

  • Minors under the age of 14 will no longer be featured on reality tv
  • Minors over the age of 14 will be required to sign an "on camera release form" at the beginning of every shoot day, away from their parents, and be limited to 2 shoot days a week until they turn 18
  • Minors under the age of 14 will no longer have their own social media, even if managed by a parent or other adult
  • Minors under the age of 14 will no longer be featured on social media accounts with over 2,000 followers (foster care agencies and other relevant organizations may be exempt)
  • People posting images/videos of minors will have to select a "this post contains mention or footage of children" button, will not be released until screened by social media company
  • Social media companies will need to implement these buttons into their code, and monitor posts for exploitative materials
  • Minors under the age of 18 will not be featured as members of "influencer" families, children should not be forced to make their home a workplace, and the few examples of non-exploitation do not outweigh the mass exploitation caused by ones parental figure also being their boss, able to strip them of food, clothes, or shelter, or inflict severe abuse, if they refuse to be exploited

These terms are certainly severe, but in today's landscape, I firmly believe safe is better than sorry. Please sign and share to help this petition reach Congress so that these long overdue child protection laws may be able to go into effect.

Thank you!
