Most of the hikers attending the Boeing Company's Earth Day Hike are unaware that they're being led through one of California's most toxic superfund sites, the Santa Susana Field Lab. The 2,850-acre site appears natural with oak trees, grassy hills, rocky outcroppings, and a variety of birds and animals... but the invisible contamination is so dangerous that Boeing's own research showed that 96 out of 100 people would get cancer if they lived on parts of the field lab, and ate the produce they grew there.
Boeing intentionally fails to warn people that the site remains dangerously contaminated with endocrine-disrupting chemicals, toxic metals, and radioactive waste because the hike is a greenwashing tactic. It's a gimmick meant to make the site appear safe, as Boeing doesn't want to bear the cost of thoroughly cleaning up the site, even though they promised to return the site to its natural condition by 2017.
It's up to us to warn hikers about the hidden dangers and to stop Boeing's greenwashing of the site. Please join us!
