This last Saturday was our “Rock the Cleanup” event, commemorating the 60th anniversary of one of America’s worst nuclear meltdowns, the Santa Susana Field Lab. It was a huge success! Nearly 200 local supporters came to paint rocks, decorate postcards for their elected officials, listen to guest speakers - all in support of the 100% cleanup.
We had two exciting things happen, one I’ll explain more in the next update, but one you may have guessed...our community members were able to meet two more moms who “move mountains.” You may have heard of them...Kim Kardashian West and Kourtney Kardashian!
The sisters live within 5-10 miles of the Santa Susana Field Lab and became very disturbed when they learned about the site’s dangers during the Woolsey Fire.
While we all painted rocks together we listened to my dear friend Lauren Hammersley who shared her daughter Hazel’s fight against cancer, a fight she lost at seven years old. Hazel is one of the reasons why we’ll never give up fighting for the cleanup, but it’s a mountain of a problem, and we need help.
Kim and Kourtney have been incredibly instrumental in our fight for the cleanup. As moms they understand that along with their own kids, our whole community is daily at risk to exposure to carcinogenic and radioactive waste.
The Kardashian sisters don’t want any more families like the Hammerselys to lose a child to a cancer that might have been avoidable if the contamination was cleaned up.
We’re so thankful that the sisters have become vocal supporters of the 100% cleanup of the site, and that they’re willing to use their celebrity status to help. It was a surreal experience meeting them, but it was amazing!
Keep up the Klean Up!
