Petition updateNo more kids with cancer: clean up the Santa Susana Field LabShe was a daddy’s girl and he was wrapped around her little finger

My husband Chad’s laid-back attitude when I was pregnant drove me crazy. I was terrified of raising our first child but he was pretty sure the new baby would be easy. He was relaxed even when I was in labor and then suddenly Grace was born. Instantly everything changed. He went from super-casual to super-dad. He tracked all her feedings, all her diapers, all her cry lengths and growth weights, because this was HIS baby, HIS little girl. It was love at first sight, for Grace as much as Chad. She was daddy’s girl and he was wrapped around her little finger. They built castles in the sandbox, sang silly songs, had PJ dance parties, and all his daddy kisses were magic. But they were no match for the effects of living miles from one of America’s worst nuclear meltdowns, the Santa Susana Field Lab. At the age of four Grace developed an incredibly rare and aggressive form of Leukemia, and it returned with a vengeance when she was seven. Grace, along with fifty other children in our community, have been diagnosed with cancer in the last six years. We think their cancers may have been caused from the nuclear and chemical waste that are still onsite at the lab, only miles from our homes. While the Department of Toxic Substances has refused to take meaningful action to clean up the site, the governor of California will have the power to elect someone to DTSC who will. Gubernatorial candidates Gavin Newsom and John Cox are both fathers – but have yet to tell us where they stand on Santa Susana. This Father’s Day, will you join our family in calling on these fathers to stand up for all of our kids? Take a picture with your father, then attach it to this tweet: https://bit.ly/2LQzHZt. With your help, hopefully not even one more dad in our community will have to hear the words, “your child has cancer.”
