Petition updateNo more kids with cancer: clean up the Santa Susana Field LabWe just want to be safe.

We protested because the California Department of Toxic Substances (DTSC) failed to protect seven year-old Hazel, who recently passed away, from the nuclear waste only miles from her home.
We also protested because the DTSC failed to warn, protect, or advocate for our community against Boeing’s nuclear disaster, the Santa Susana Field Lab. We had a moment of silence for Hazel too. Two days later I was with her family at the cemetery as they lowered her small, white casket into the ground.
Our community has been broken by decades of cancers and health issues in our community, but the DTSC has not taken meaningful action to help us. And kids like Hazel have had to pay the price.
At the meeting we learned that the DTSC has agreed to Boeing’s request for an additional seventeen years to complete the cleanup. We learned that DTSC won't hold the Dept. of Energy and NASA accountable for failing to have the cleanup done last year, despite agreements signed in 2010. We learned DTSC is considering letting Boeing get away with leaving most of the contamination on site, permanently. We learned that the DTSC is willing to lie to the community if it spares them embarrassment, they’re willing to hide critical facts in thousands of pages of paperwork, and they’re willing to make concerned residents seem paranoid while making Boeing seem responsible.
But it wasn’t a meeting without purpose, because Hazel’s life mattered, and our children are worth the fight. Hazel deserved more than cancer, she deserved to live in a 100% nuclear-free environment.
Help us by signing and sharing our petition, in order to protect our kids from exposure to carcinogenic and nuclear waste at the Santa Susana Field Lab.
