I know Dan Hirsche, he's a genuinely good guy, and a long time advocate for the Santa Susana Field Lab cleanup. In a news interview he said it bluntly...the latest Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) report is "ass-backwards." Rather than come up with viable options for the cleanup that would be safe, the DTSC released a report that only listed dangers but didn't correlate any cleanup methods to the dangers they listed. The report was a huge letdown. I had hoped the DTSC would keep their promises to stand up to Boeing and list cleanup options that would propose cutting-edge technology that would not only cleanup the site completely, but safely. The DTSC report didn't do any of that. It seemed to be another stall tactic...a scare tactic...and backwards thinking. It feels like they have all the time in the world, because they know if they keep playing the same games they can drag out delaying the cleanup another thirty years. In the last four months since my daughter relapsed, I've met three new children from our community who have been diagnosed with cancer. Every day matters for us, and especially to our children. "They are analyzing the environmental impacts before they even have the proposal as to what they will or won't clean up," Hirsche said. "It's idiocy."
