Ventura County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a letter to the Department of Toxic Substances Control asking that it uphold the SSFL cleanup agreements on December 12, 2017. The Board voted 3 to 2 for the cleanup letter.
The board was meant to vote the week before but was postponed due to the Thomas Fire nearby. They had been informed that our petition was then at 32,000 signatures. When they reconvened the petition was over 60,000 signatures. I strongly believe it was our petition's growth that swayed them to vote for the complete cleanup. It is a major step for nearby residents who want their children to grow up in a safe environment, free of nuclear and chemical waste.
Although the Department of Toxic Substances has not made their final decision for the cleanup public yet, the vote of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors is likely to weigh heavily on their decision.
