An 11-year-old boy with autism was arrested at Pat Neff Middle School and spent eight days in juvenile detention after an emotional episode resulted in a teacher being injured. His father was given almost no information—just told his son was "going downtown." No social worker. No mental health expert. No call for help. Just handcuffs.

This child needed support. Instead, he was criminalized.

Despite his father submitting documentation of his autism diagnosis, Northside ISD claimed they had no formal record. But teachers and staff had worked with him all year, they knew he had additional needs. The district’s response reveals a heartbreaking lack of communication, compassion, and preparedness.

We must not accept a system where schools respond to disability with incarceration. As advocates have stated, jailing a neurodivergent child is not only harmful, it can permanently traumatize them. It’s not just a failure of policy. It’s a failure of humanity.

Students with disabilities deserve:

• Crisis response rooted in understanding, not force.
• Access to trained specialists, not handcuffs.
• Protection and dignity, not prison walls.

We demand:

• Immediate dismissal of all charges against this child.
• A full investigation into Northside ISD’s handling of this case.
• Mandatory training for school staff on autism and de-escalation.
• Clear procedures to ensure neurodivergent students are supported, not punished.

This child is not a criminal. He is a human being failed by a system that should have protected him. Let’s make sure this never happens again.
