NO MORE DISRUPTIONS IN UNIT 4

The Issue

To the Unit 4 Administration and Board of Education,

Our request is simple, we request no more disruptions to student learning.  The current elementary students of Unit 4 have been through a number of disruptions. In 2019-2020, students lost months of instruction as the schools shut down in March 2020 due to the pandemic.  From 2020-2022, elementary students did not receive consistent access to Unit 4 schools and they certainly did not receive the instructional hours they deserved.

After years of disruption, the parents in Unit 4 are dismayed that the Board of Education and Unit 4 administrators are promoting a plan which will cause more pain and struggle for our children. You may not rip our children out of their schools right now. Our children have finally started learning, made friends, and formed a community at their home schools, many of these neighborhood schools. We request no more disruptions to our kids' education.

We, the parents and taxpayers, demand that you address the opportunity gap in Unit 4 without displacing thousands of children from schools that they know and love. The achievement gap will not be closed without listening to what communities of color actually want and need. Beyond it being immediately disruptive, a school reshuffling is an attempt avoid more direct investment in Black and Brown students in our district.

We ask that you take time to collect input from communities across the district and choose the least disruptive solution.

The Unit 4 Board of Education and administrators must allow current elementary students to stay at their school.  Furthermore, the Unit 4 Board of Education must stop, slow down, and consider what impact any changes will have on our more vulnerable students. Unit 4 must improve the opportunity gap, but not by displacing families, siblings, support networks, adding to commute times, and disrupting our children!
