No “KKK” dogwhistles in Sylva- KoleKim Inc Change Its Name.
The Issue
Many students at WCU, and residents of Sylva and surrounding areas have raised concerns regarding the names of various locations and signage by KoleKim Inc., specifically those starting with 'KoleKimK____', which can be interpreted as a dog whistle for the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). This is deeply concerning and offensive.
More examples: “KoleKim Korner” “KoleKim Kove” “KoleKim Komplex” “KoleKim Kommerce” “KoleKim Kurve”
The Ku Klux Klan was a racist organization that perpetrated violence against African Americans and other minority groups. Its presence in our history is a stark reminder of racial hatred and bigotry which we should not subtly endorse or recall through such naming conventions.
In 2020, North Carolina reported an increase in hate crimes by 12% compared to previous years (source: North Carolina Department of Justice). The potential association between KoleKim Inc.'s location names and the KKK could inadvertently contribute to this alarming trend if left unaddressed.
This issue impacts not only students but citizens in Sylva. If such veiled references are acceptable here, it could invite racism and violence into our city - making it unsafe for all residents while misrepresenting our values as a community.
We urge KoleKim Inc. to change their location's names immediately so they do not bear any resemblance or connection with any hate group like the KKK. By doing so, they would be taking an important step towards promoting inclusivity and respect within our community.
Please sign this petition if you agree that no business should have naming conventions that may promote or recall racial hatred or violence in any form.

We intend to use this petition to show the support that concerned residents and students have in removing a KKK dog whistle from Sylva. If need be, the results of this petition will be used to further urge the town of Sylva to pressure KoleKim Inc. if they do not change on their own.
