No IAPS Exam for Ms.Cooper's IAPS Class

The Issue

Dear Ms. Cooper,

Your class kindly requests the removal of the course exam in the Introduction to Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology (IAPS) course. Although evaluations are important, it's possible that the way exams are now designed for this interdisciplinary course may not effectively assess students. The IAPS course requires fusion across fields, and the level of comprehension and critical thinking needed may not be effectively evaluated by a typical exam.

Consider the following reasons for the removal of exams in the IAPS course:

  1. Interdisciplinarity: The IAPS course explores all three main social sciences: anthropology, psychology, and sociology. Exams may not effectively evaluate a student's capacity to integrate knowledge across these various topics.

  2. Promotion of Critical Thinking: Rather than relying just on memorizing facts, assignments that encourage thinking critically, analyzing, and applying ideas may be a more effective way to evaluate IAPS. Assignments or real-world applications could more accurately demonstrate a student's understanding of the course.

  3. Application in the Real World: The goal of the IAPS course is to provide students with a very comprehensive but broad grasp of human behavior in practical settings. Assignments could more closely match the course goals and enable students to apply their learning in different relevant contexts.

  4. Reducing Stress and Anxiety: ACI Students already feel a lot of stress and anxiety which is especially heightened by exams. Alternative evaluation techniques (like assignments) may reduce this stress given the extensive size of the IAPS course, promoting a more pleasant learning atmosphere.

We, as a class, suggest the removal of exam from the course. This change aligns with the course's aspects and enhances the overall learning experience. Although we are aware that exams help us prepare better for post-secondary education, if we have exams for every course we have taken, this is no longer the case and is only making us more stressed out than we already are. Thank you for considering this.

Best regards,
Your favorite class, ever
