No Data Center in Socorro, NM behind M Mountain!

No Data Center in Socorro, NM behind M Mountain!
The Issue
We are deeply troubled by the proposed construction of a data center behind M Mountain, as mentioned in the Green Data article run by the El Defensor Chieftain in April 2026. This initiative strikes at the very heart of our community and poses significant threats to our water resources and environment.
Despite assurances, the data center will not be a benign addition to our landscape. Its presence threatens to raise local temperatures due to the heat output from its operations, a change that could disturb the delicate ecosystem. Such repercussions will inevitably result in the plundering of crucial water resources, which locals, ranchers and farmers rely on. We cannot ignore the broader environmental impacts that such an intrusive industrial construction could have such as displacing wildlife and disrupting their habitat. This could lead to unforeseen ecological consequences.
Furthermore, the proposed project jeopardizes the operations of the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center (EMRTC), a vital institution to NMT not just in terms of employment but also the safety of the research that it's renowned for. The potential electromagnetic interference and proposed nuclear reactor could detrimentally affect their ability to safely fulfill contract agreements with it's customers.
The company behind this data center claims they can pull water from the atmosphere. Where are the peer reviewed papers backing the non-laboratory replicated test findings on pulling moisture from an arid atmosphere? Where are the real world studies and proof this technology can be replicated reliably? This seems like a convenient place holder while they steal our water. We must decide if we are a community of science or if we are happy falling prey to profiteering??
Just like the Facebook Data Center in Los Lunas, this initiative will NOT bring in jobs, but rather bring in outside talent whom, due to Socorro's limited housing, will likely live in Valencia County and not directly contribute to our town's economy or workforce.
We, the community of the Socorro area and New Mexico Tech, must stand unified against this development. Our land and our water should not be auctioned off at the cost of our livelihoods and natural surroundings. In making the terrain behind M Mountain a data center, we compromise not just today, but the future of our community.
I urge you to stand with us in this effort. Please add your signature to protest against the development of this data center and demonstrate our resolve to protect our environment and our way of life. Together, we can ensure that Socorro, New Mexico, remains untouched and thriving for generations to come. Your support is crucial. Sign the petition today.
