The Issue

Did you know that the State of NJ plans to develop the Sunset Beach & Higbee Wildlife areas? The multi-million-dollar plan, already underway, seeks to make changes to the currently undeveloped natural haven but has many unintended consequences.

For more than 65 years, the Sunset Beach Sportsmen’s Club (SBSC) has existed on a small portion of land tucked away behind several commercial buildings and uses present in the area of Sunset Beach.

As long-time active supporters of veteran & active military organizations, schools, police & fire department fundraisers, local charities, and other benevolent organizations, many throughout Cape May County know our Club's name. However, few know that we have a physical location. Why? Since our founding, we have existed quietly and harmoniously among our neighbors, our most cherished of which is nature. We've paid our property taxes since 1957, contributed to the community, and maintained & improved the land and our clubhouse.

Despite this long and successful history, on February 1, 2022, The State sent a notice to The Sunset Beach Sportsmen's Club (SBSC) demanding that SBSC vacate the premises within 90 days.

It is unclear why the State seeks to interrupt the Club’s longstanding history. The Club does not stand in the way of the State’s intended development and as recently as 2014, the State proposed a version of a plan which included the SBSC in its current location, confirming that our continued presence on a small portion would not impede the State’s intended development. Despite the availability of other options, the Club is now being forced to respond to the State’s claim for eviction.

Please sign your support to ask the State to SAVE OUR CLUB and allow us to remain at our original Sunset Beach home.

About the Sunset Beach Sportsmen's Club:
The SBSC was founded in the 1940s by a few friends as they fished from the shoreline of Sunset Beach. Since then, our Club has grown to include a small clubhouse and a diverse membership of more than 160 members, including veterans and active military members, active and retired police, firefighters, and EMTs, local business owners, and educators, to name a few. Although we've grown and added a commitment to supporting charitable efforts throughout the community, we continue to hold fast to the core mission of our original members: promoting "the welfare and conservation of fish, game, and natural resources."
