Nissin Foods — the year 2030 is too late. Stop using problematic palm oil now!
署名活動の主旨
NISSIN FOODS purchases palm oil produced illegally in Indonesia connected to deforestation and violations of the rights of Indigenous peoples. The sites of tropical forest destruction include the last habitats of wild Sumatran orangutans, elephants, rhinos and tigers.
Since 2013, we have demanded that Nissin Foods stop using problematic palm oil. After many years of activist effort, Nissin Foods announced in June 2020 an environmental strategy called "Earth Food Challenge 2030" in which they promised to procure only sustainable palm oil by fiscal year 2030, but 2030 is too late.
The company has taken a small step forward with the goal of setting the domestic sustainable palm oil target to 2025 for Japan, however, the targets for domestic procurement of other products, as well as for the whole Nissin Group —operating in the Americas, Europe, and Asia — remain unchanged for 2030. Other global companies are working toward the goal of achieving responsible palm oil by 2023 —NISSIN FOODS is lagging behind.
Neither the planet, nor its wildlife, nor we can wait until 2030.
NISSIN FOODS states, "Through cup noodles, we are working on what we should do and what we can do for the future of the earth and people. Through the CUP NOODLES 'DO IT NOW!' campaign, we will start a new initiative to be responsible towards one another."
The “mass balance” approach to palm oil sourcing that NISSIN FOODS has adopted under the “Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO) belies these lofty promises . Mass balance is a mixture of problematic palm oil and certified palm oil, and its origin cannot be fully traced, and whose involvement in deforestation and human rights abuses is therefore unclear.
In order to seriously tackle sustainability concerns, NISSIN FOODS must thoroughly enforce the NDPE policy of no deforestation, no development of peatlands, and no exploitation in a way that does not cause deforestation or human rights violations.
We need your help demanding that NISSIN FOODS only use palm oil that is free from deforestation, biodiversity loss, and human rights violations as soon as possible.
Help us demand that NISSIN FOODS bring forward its target year. Please join us now!
(Note that this signature campaign started in 2023 and has the same basic purpose as the previous petitions’ contents, but since the change.org petition carried out in the past partially achieved its goals, we started this new online petition.)

Mr. Michael Price, President of Nissin America
In August 2020, in response to growing public opinion, NISSIN FOODS announced a new commitment to procuring sustainable palm oil, stating that palm oil produced without deforestation and with respect for human rights promised to procure In addition, in the new environmental strategy announced in June of the same year, we set a goal to "procure only sustainable palm oil by fiscal 2030." In June 2021, NISSIN FOODS promised to set its domestic instant noodles target for the fiscal year 2025. And 2030 will remain the same. By 2030, it is too late and it is unacceptable that the problematic palm oil will be used to make instant noodles for years to come.
Nissin Foods, please take immediate steps to procure 100% problem-free palm oil that meets the NDPE policy of no deforestation, no development of peatlands, and no exploitation.
Do the following 4 things now!
Immediately develop and publish a binding implementation plan with a significantly accelerated deadline from 2030 to ensure group-wide elimination of problematic palm oil from their supply chains.
Disclose all palm oil suppliers.
Demonstrate policy implementation by establishing a new mechanism for monitoring and independently verifying palm oil suppliers' compliance with the policy.
Specify that the No Deforestation, No Peat Exploitation, No Exploitation (NDPE) policy will be a requirement for suppliers in the group-wide procurement policy covering all forest-risk commodities, including palm oil.
The “mass balance” method of the “Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil” (RSPO) adopted by NISSIN FOODS is palm oil produced in certified farms, and the production area cannot be traced. It is a mixture of problematic palm oils. Its involvement in deforestation and human rights abuses has not been addressed, and the RSPO certification mechanism is still unreliable.
Nissin Foods is a world-famous brand company and the inventor of instant noodles. Now is the time to take on the challenge of becoming a “truly progressive company” that protects forests and human rights.
