Niskayuna Central School District has thoroughly researched the School Resource Officer program. 

- A 2024 study by Altaris Consulting Group recommended School Resource Officers. 
- An earlier petition on change.org garnered nearly 1,500 signatures (https://www.change.org/p/niskayuna-csd-support-a-school-resource-officer-sro-program
- The Superintendent submitted a plan and funding was allocated for the program for the 2025-26 school year. 

NOW School Board members who are unhappy they did not get their way are trying to derail this by stopping its funding. The Niskayuna School Board President recommended that the line item for the SRO program be placed in a separate referendum to be voted on separate from the budget. An “unprecedented” move according to the board, one that they had to research if it was even legal. Her rationale: the SRO program is such a “divisive” topic. 

The actual rationale: School Budget votes have notoriously low voter turnout. If the anti-SRO board members can recruit their family and friends to come in and vote no on the SRO referendum, they can remove it from the budget.
