Community members have patiently waited while the Niskayuna School District and BOE engaged Altaris Consulting Group (Yorktown, NY) to review safety and security over the last four months. Altaris will be presenting at the Tuesday, September 10th BOE regular meeting which begins 6pm at VA (please consider attending or listening via livestream). The District has said that Altaris' detailed report and recommendations will be considered confidential and will not be distributed to the public/parents/general staff.
The Geogia school shootings this week are a parent's worst nightmare. Of significance, reports state that the school's teachers had wearable panic buttons which alerted authorities to the danger immediately pinpointing their location, automatically sending out an emergency message to all school devices, and the school's resource officer took the 14 year-old suspect into custody shortly after he began shooting. The school also had classroom doors which automatically lock when closed.
We continue to urge the Niskayuna BOE, Superintendent Carl Mummenthey, and District leadership to accelerate this review process so that our District can improve safety and security protocols/programs to keep our students and staff as safe as possible.
