A recent motion to ban the sale and consumption of dog meat in Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom State was rejected by lawmakers in early December 2025, meaning there is no nationwide ban in place.
Etinan State Constituency, Hon. Uduak Ekpoufot, has sponsored a bill for dog meat consumption to be banned in Akwa Ibom State Ekpoufot argued that exposes consumers to dangerous pathogens such as rabies, salmonella, trichinella, and other parasites.
