Thousands of people with Learning Disabilities and Autism in Scotland are being forcibly administered life- shortening drugs because of their behaviour. It was common practice throughout the UK and a violation of EU and UN legislation. England and Wales, in the wake of the Panorama expose of Winterborne View, have urgently revised the NICE guidelines to advise that antipsychotics should not be the first course of action for challenging behaviour and that other problems, including physical ones, should be addressed first. Scotland has not followed this example and this abhorrent practice continues. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome but has been rediagnosed with a medical condition which causes brain inflammation. The NHS will not accept a very eminent psychiatrist's new diagnosis. The drugs he has been given exacerbate the condition. He is now forcibly injected with Risperidal. SIGN needs to address this as a matter of urgency. There is no point of bringing in new legislation with an offence of wilful neglect and ill-treatment, while the Scottish guidelines are still allowing this to happen.
