Niagara Falls 2026 Ward Election Petition

Niagara Falls 2026 Ward Election Petition
The Issue
We, the undersigned citizens of Niagara Falls, Ontario, hereby petition the City Council to adopt a ward election system for the 2026 municipal elections. We believe that a ward system would significantly enhance democracy and representation within our city.
Currently, the 'at-large' system, where all council members are elected by the entire city, often results in a disconnect between residents and their representatives. A ward system, where each councillor represents a specific geographical area, fosters a stronger sense of community and accountability. Council members would be more attuned to the unique needs and concerns of their respective wards, leading to more targeted and effective solutions for local issues.
Increased voter turnout, especially among traditionally marginalized communities often overlooked in at-large systems, is another anticipated benefit. By dividing the city into smaller electoral districts, each resident's voice carries greater weight and their participation feels more impactful. Furthermore, a ward system encourages more diverse candidates and a wider range of viewpoints to emerge, enriching the council's decision-making process and improving the responsiveness of city government to the needs of all residents.
We urge the City Council to consider the significant advantages of a ward election system and initiate the necessary steps to implement this important democratic reform in Niagara Falls.
Support and Signatures: Anyone can sign in support, but only registered voters in the Niagara Falls municipality can contribute to the 500 signatures needed.
Once 500 confirmed registered voters have signed the petition, it will be brought before the City Council.
Please share the links as widely as possible. We only need 500 signatures. If they do not make the change, their decision will be appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal. The more signatures we have over 500, the more weight our appeal will carry.
It is free to sign, no need to provide a contribution at the end.
