Please Shut down Pets Plus (Lockport ny)

Please Shut down Pets Plus (Lockport ny)

The Issue

Those who live locally are all too familiar with Lockport's pet store, Pets Plus. It's been shut down repeatedly, but seems to always re-open with minor changes. I went in there the other day just to look around. You don't even have to enter the building to smell the stench of animal urine seeping through the outside walls. Immediately you know to hold your nose as soon as you enter. Anyone who has any compassion for animals will instantly be appalled by the unsanitary conditions. Dogs and cats are confined to these small metal crates with small wash cloth sized blankets. The smaller dogs refrain from moving because their paws fall through the holes on the bottom of the kennel. Hamsters and mice are kept in small overcrowded fish tanks, that do not appear to be cleaned on a regular basis. The staff is unfriendly and unaccommodating to customer concerns over the welfare of the animals, or their unsanitary conditions. In one instance, the back door was left open and when I peeked inside they had about 5 or 6 live full grown ferrets in a single fish tank. They were laying on top of each other because they had no room to move. When I went in the other day there was a beautiful white German Shepherd, from afar he looked healthy but sad. I asked to see him, seeing as I was looking for a puppy anyways. After getting closer I noticed he smelled, was covered in his own urine, his nails were long and gross, his coat was rough and stained, and he had gunk in his eyes. Anyone who has basic experience with dogs would be fully aware that this dog was not being taken care of! I wanted nothing more than to take this dog home with me, but when I asked how much he was they said $1,000. To me this is absolutely ridiculous for a dog who is probably from a puppy mill, and that obviously isn't in the best condition, on top of that doesn't even have proper papers. I was forced to leave the dog there seeing as I didn't have the money. I realized buying the dog wouldn't solve the problem though, given the number of other animals in these poor conditions. This place needs to be shut down once and for all. I called the SPCA when I got home and the women I talked to wasn't surprised at all. She informed me of their own ongoing battle with state regulations in regards to shutting Pets Plus down. She said they have to put their personal opinions aside because Pets Plus's animals and conditions just narrowly pass the New York State regulations. She continued to say that if it was up to them it would have been shut down along time ago. She referred me to a website, agriculture.ny.gov. On the website where you can find a pet dealer license complaint form to fill out. http://www.agriculture.ny.gov/ai/small_animals.html I'm hoping though that if enough people sign this the Niagara County SPCA will do another investigation, or an actual state investigation and we can finally shut it down for good. You can find several online reviews and ratings that support and agree with my experience. While reading other people's stories about Pets Plus I found multiple reviews explaining how their dogs came with kennel cough, heart worm, parasites, missing fur, and more. Unfortunately you also hear countless stories about dogs purchased from there dying young from disease. Coincidence? Pet stores shouldn't even be buying and selling puppies anymore, they should work hand and hand with rescues and display dogs in need of homes. Like PETsMART, who works with the SPCA and other local rescues. So please help me help these animals, lets work on not only getting Pets Plus shut down but pets stores to no longer be able to buy and sell puppies. Thank You and please share.
