Petition updateProvide tests for Group B Strep to prevent any more avoidable deaths of newborn babies#Babyloss event in Parliament, and a chance to raise awareness of #groupBStrep

Today, I attended the event in Speaker's House organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Baby Loss, hosted by the co-chairs Antoinette Sandbach MP and Will Quince MP. The photo below shows them, with Victoria Prentis MP, Lord Boswell and Jane Plumb MBE, Chief Executive of Group B Strep Support, who invited me to this event. Just before the event, Will had also managed to ask a question on baby loss and bereavement in Prime Minister's Question Time, drawing more attention in Parliament during this significant week on to this difficult but vitally important subject. It was an emotional event, with speeches about personal experiences of baby loss from Antoinette and Will, and also from Chris, co-founder of the charity Teddy's Wish who helped arrange the event. Chris's speech was especially emotional for me, as he spoke about losing his son Edward very near the time we lost our own Edward. Much of what he said about the devastating loss you feel and wanting to keep his son's light burning and to make his baby son proud of what his Mummy and Daddy were achieving in his name really resonated with me. The Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt also spoke, along Health Minister Phillip Dunne, about the Government's ambition to reduce the rate of stillbirth, neonatal and maternal deaths and brain injury around birth in England by 50% by 2030. It is worth bearing in mind that the UK currently has one of the worst rates of this in Europe. Clearly the lack of screening for group B Strep carriage is contributing to this ignominious position. Our case to the parliamentarians is that routine ECM testing for GBS is an obvious and necessary way to help make the ambition a reality now. Tomorrow (Thursday) there will be a Back Bench Business debate focused on baby loss and we hope that group B Strep will be raised as part of this. The debate starts at around 11 am and should be available on channels streaming Parliament live. Please keep sharing the petition - we are so close to 250,000 signatures!
