Save Newcastle WildlifeNewcastle upon Tyne, ENG, United Kingdom
27 Jan 2017
We are still awaiting the formal application for Cell A. In the meantime, you may like to see how the current proposals could drastically alter the landscape and wildlife in and around Havannah Nature Reserve – even before the houses are built. Construction work in Newcastle Great Park has been ongoing for what seems like an eternity. Some development ‘cells’ are taking much longer to complete than others. Industrial waste and general detritus from these works – and workers – has become established in hedgerows and trees in the surrounding area. Cell A, directly adjacent to Havannah Nature Reserve and earmarked for 1,200 houses, is likely to generate similar levels of waste, even closer to the reserve. If works in Cell A go ahead in the same manner as elsewhere in the Great Park, trees and hedgerows and streams and ponds in the reserve could soon be strewn with all kinds of waste, compromising wildlife and fragile ecosystems. This is why we must ensure any development takes place as far a way from the reserve as possible. We can only do this by putting pressure on the council to reduce the number of houses built in Cell A.
