Mr Hunt has again sent through correspondence referring to the National consultation process that occurred last year around the plan for maternity care in Australia (NSAMS).  He again acknowledged that the status of babies as patients had been raised by numerous stakeholders during the consultation process, but AGAIN gave no indication af any action, and AGAIN tried to deflect the responsibility for action elsewhere. He says that his department does not have oversight of the legislation that needs to change.

The legislation IS clearly federal, and the definition of newborn patient status (qualification) IS part of the Australian Institute of Healthcare Registry: https://meteor.aihw.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/327254 The registry IS under the banner of the Australian Government, and a division of the Australian health department.

Mothers, families and midwives need change now, not more hand-balls, excuses and words. We’ve waited, had consultations, read the draft reports and responses.  The issue is well documented, the need for change is clearly justified, and the responsibility lies with Mr Hunt to act.

The Victorian government has passed laws guaranteeing  minimum patient ratios for midwives, with these quotes from Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos

“Our fantastic nurses and midwives work hard to look after us when we are at our most vulnerable. We’re supporting them with the pay and conditions they deserve, so they can work safely and well.”

“The evidence is clear – nurses and midwives who can spend more time with each patient give higher quality care in a safer environment, helping people recover and get back to their lives more quickly.”

This problem though is Australia-wide and needs a national solution.  Thank you for your support, it is with that support I will keep pressing for action!

Please keep sharing the petition,

Kelly
