Help The Green Mansion (and our Small Town)!

The Issue

Newark, Delaware is a small town WITH CHARM. Help us keep it that way.

Local Developer Jeff Lang has already won a bid to build a hotel on the property of the Historic Green Mansion on Main Street in our town. However, he has recently brought forward a proposal to alter his plans, which includes replacing office space that encourages local business with 48 apartments for College Students.

But that's not the main issue. This building will tower at SEVEN STORIES, high above any other building on our Main Street, and is planned to be covered with stucco and brick veneer (cheap materials meant to mimic the character of our TRUE HISTORIC BUILDINGS). If allowed to be built in its current state, it will be an EYESORE for decades to come. We have already seen dozens of cheaply made buildings 'spring up' over the past few years, which claim to "preserve the character of our small town". THEY DO NOT.

Developers in Newark have long disregarded our town's unique history, and have demolished dozens of historic buildings in the past few years, replacing them with structures that detract from Newark's charm, which is of concern to its citizens.

Development is not necessarily a bad thing, and it is acceptable for new buildings to be built, but if a Historic building is going to be altered or destroyed, it should be replaced BY A BUILDING OF QUALITY.

We are asking for the Newark City Council to REJECT Lang Development's plan at their meeting on March 8th, and make Lang come back with a plan that respects our history, and is something Newarkers can be PROUD OF.
