Our country may be developed, but everyday people go hungry for a variety of reasons such as unexpected bills, redundancy and homelessness. A 2013 University of Otago study revealed that 34,000 people, or about one in every 120 New Zealanders, were unable to access housing in 2006.

This has resulted in an increasing need for food banks. Figures published by The New Zealand Herald showed families seeking food parcels from the Salvation Army increased to 27,612 - including 34,482 children between them - in 2011.

Our supermarkets throw away millions of dollars worth of edible food each week. Food rotting in landfills doesn't benefit our society, so we think it should be given to charity.
