2021 NCEA Exams extension disagreement
2021 NCEA Exams extension disagreement
The issue
NZQA has made a decision on August the 25th to extend the examination period of New Zealand Secondary School Students an extra 14 days. Forcing students to stay at school for longer periods of time than initially planned, and indefinitely interrupting other plans which have been made by students in the allocated period of time which it has been extended to (at the latest December 14th). I myself planned to be working in the 14 days which NZQA has now allocated to the NCEA end-of-year externals. I am sure I am not the only student who will have sorted out a job for the summer, and this year especially is very important for year 13 students to earn money over the summer. A large number of students will be leaving school and starting university in 2022, and by disallowing students to make money they may face a serious financial struggle when it comes to their tertiary studies. Overall, the general consensus around my friends and me, and also many others in which I have asked their opinion, is that this decision is unnecessary. In my school, the whole syllabus for each subject has either been finished or near about, and there is still another 3 months until our end of year externals, it is too premature and will definitely affect the mental well being of thousands of students, at what cost. Idealistically, the exams will be carried out on the same initial dates and there will be no change unless it is necessary, because as of right now it is not.
