Petition updateNew Zealand, please don't bend your knee to Trump! The psychology Behind the New Zealand Government's Decision to Remain Neutral - Democracy vs Fascism
New Zealand Democracy Defenders Association (NZDDA)Aotearoa, New Zealand

Why? AI response: The psychology behind this, and the context regarding the democracy/fascism spectrum, can be broken down into several factors:

The New Zealand government, particularly under the National-led coalition formed in late 2023, has adopted a strategy often described as "independent" or a "reset" of foreign policy, which involves hedging between competing global powers rather than taking a hard side. This approach is driven by a combination of economic vulnerability, a small-state psychology of survival, and a desire to balance relationships with traditional security partners (USA/Australia) and its largest trading partner (China)

Pragmatic Realism and Economic Dependence

The China Factor:

China is New Zealand’s top trading partner. The government avoids siding with Western bloc efforts to contain China because doing so could severely damage New Zealand's export-driven economy.

Small-State Survival:

With limited military capabilities, NZ operates on the assumption that its security relies on diplomatic agility rather than raw power.

"The Hedging" Policy: The 2024-2025 "Foreign Policy Reset" aims to keep "friends close" (US/Australia) while maintaining necessary economic links with China.

The Psychology of "Independent Foreign Policy"

Non-Alignment Tradition: Historically, NZ prides itself on a "nuclear-free" and independent stance. This is not necessarily neutrality, but a desire to make decisions based on national interest rather than automatic alliance obedience.

Prudence vs. Passivity: The current government frames its approach as "prudence"—knowing when to speak and when to hold counsel to avoid being dragged into conflicts.

Contextualizing "Democracy vs. Fascism"

While New Zealand is a stable democracy, the perception that it is avoiding a side in this ideological conflict is linked to domestic and international dynamics:

Domestic Political Shifts: The 2023-2024 government is considered the most right-wing in decades, leading to internal debates about "democratic backsliding" or "executive overreach" (e.g., using fast-track legislation).

Far-Right Elements: While fringe, groups like Action Zealandia (far-right/fascist ideology) have been active, and some political discourse has been criticized for adopting populist, anti-immigration, or anti-Māori rhetoric, which critics on the left have labeled as "fascism" or "hard-right".

Avoiding Ideological Warfare: The government largely avoids framing international relations in terms of "democracy vs. authoritarianism" because it needs to maintain functional, profitable relationships with various regimes.

Psychological Factors Behind the "Neutrality" Stance

"Live and Let Live": A core Kiwi cultural value is the "live and let live" attitude, which often translates into not wanting to judge the internal politics of other nations.

Fear of Consequences: There is a strong fear of being caught in the crossfire of US-China rivalry, creating a psychological barrier against taking a definitive, confrontational side.

Public Apathy: Surveys have shown that a portion of the population is, in some cases, surprisingly open to stronger, less democratic leadership, which might reduce political pressure to take a hard anti-authoritarian stance.

In summary, the New Zealand government's reluctance to "take sides" is a deeply pragmatic, somewhat anxious strategy aimed at protecting its economy and security by avoiding alignment with either side of the growing global ideological divide.

NZDDA response:

The New Zealand government must support Greenland or take a stand. Which side are we on now - fascism or democracy? Here in New Zealand the press is failing to ask that fundamental question. We are getting the sense that everyone is afraid of that narcissist in the Oval Office, and everyone is scared about more tariffs.

It's pathetic! It is time for the New Zealand government to show some backbone and stand up to that spoiled demented toddler running the US right now. This petition has only 60 signatures demonstrating, how little resistance we have here in New Zealand against this 21st-Century US MAGA Fascism movement at the moment.

We would like to thank everyone who had the vision and signed this petition so far. Please share this petition again and again. We must start to resist the Trump regime in the US unless we all want to be part of Trump's 1984 George Orwell vision for the world. We don't want to be part of that vision, and we should have a say in how we respond to the US democratic threat as New Zealand citizens. Sign the petition!
