Require ACC to pay a living wage to those with long-term injuries/disabilities

The issue

With increasing living costs people with long term disabilities caused by accidental injury struggle to live on ACC compensation.

  • Many live around or below the minimum wage.
  • Many are near homelessness
  • Every 3 months they need to prove impairment.
  • Many require accessible housing (near impossible to attain)
  • All have to beg for any ongoing ACC support

ACC recipients constantly need to choose between to have much needed medical treatments not covered by ACC & basic living costs such as rent, food and health.

ACC's default setting is to decline a request for any requested support, giving them a feeling of needing to beg for ACC to support them. This puts unnecessary stress on whanau causing an increase in pain levels, and many times isolating them.

Under current compensation levels long term ACC recipients are unable to contribute to basic living costs & seem lost in red tape unable to live because of an accidental injury. These issues only increase once retired as recipients go off ACC and onto the pension.

Long term ACC recipients are asking for basic human rights to be meet, not money; all they want to do is to live a life equal to before their accident.
