Cross Government leadership of New Zealand's COVID response

The issue

New Zealand's elimination strategy for the COVID-19 virus is not working. We cannot keep locking down the country or regions every time the virus reemerges. The elderly and those with pre-existing conditions need to be cared for while the economy continues to operate. The upcoming election in September is clearly an obstacle to dealing with this issue. A government that looks over its shoulder at being reelected. Their current strategy is political by nature. This isolates the opposition from being effective. It is time for cross-party collaboration to lead the country’s response forward. A cross-party commission needs to be established. This commission needs to include the countries top health and business experts. It needs to be chaired by a non-partisan person that is not from a political party. The corporate world needs to be included as this is not an issue that can be solved by the Government alone. This is an opportunity to forge a new era in collaborative leadership.
