Support NYU Students' Demands for Reparations for African-American Students

The Issue

As students in a social-cultural analysis course at NYU, we are analyzing how New York University can conceptualize reparations and make them tangible for students and communities who are descended from American Chattel Slavery.

As students that are paying to attend this school, we have the power and authority to determine how this institution allocates its funding and resources. Our demands are the following:

  1. The creation of scholarships specifically dedicated for American Descendants of Slavery and tuition allocation for a reparations fund
  2. Hiring more Black faculty, especially for subjects on or related to Black history
  3. Create partnerships with local Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) by donating funds, and enabling HBCU students to spend a semester at NYU for no additional cost
  4. Increase in funds for Black student groups on campus and other programs that promote justice & inclusion
  5. Cutting ties with NYPD
  6. Taking accountability for gentrification that NYU is responsible for and the way it disproportionately affects impoverished and African American New Yorkers
  7. Issuing funds to support projects like health clinics and schools in underprivileged communities home to the enslaved people’s descendants
  8. The creation of a council dedicated to holding NYU accountable for the reparations it owes ADOS & African-American students in general
  9. Establishing funds and efforts for NYU faculty & researchers to build a website detailing NYU’s history with slavery
