Save Central Harlem Historic District Stables

The Issue

The proposed Central Harlem Historic District is comprised of a variety of structures, all of which are extremely significant to the district and the streetscapes of the individual blocks.  This highly intact district illustrates not only the architectural development of Harlem, but the rich social, cultural, and political life of Harlem’s African American population in the 20th century.

The boundaries set out by the Landmarks Preservation Commission in  https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/lpc/downloads/pdf/harlemw130th_132nd_20171212_map_with_blurb.pdf and by Harlem Community Board 10: http://www.nyc.gov/html/mancb10/downloads/pdf/final_preservation_report.pdf should not be reduced in any way.

The owner of 161 West 132nd St, originally built as stables and currently used as a garage, is lobbying to have this historic structure removed from the district.  The building was constructed in 1891 by architect was Julius F. Munckwitz Sr. who maintained a practice in Harlem and contributed to many significant projects in New York City, including the Central Park Boat house.  This must not be allowed to happen.
