Likkle but Tallawah: A Call for CHANGE in Jamaica Football

We are, and have always been, “likkle but tallawah.”
As individuals—and even more so as a culture—we have punched above our weight on talent, resilience, and belief.

That is why Jamaica’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026 is not just disappointing.
It is an embarrassment.

This qualification cycle represented our clearest and most accessible pathway to the World Cup — geographically, competitively, and in terms of supporter turnout both at home and abroad. The magnitude of this failure, poor performance, and missed opportunity cannot be ignored or explained away.

This moment must lead to CHANGE in Jamaica’s football culture.

Change cannot begin at the bottom.
It must begin at the top — with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF).

A Roadmap for Reform

We propose a reset grounded in accountability, professionalism, and long‑term development:

Step 1: Leadership Identification

Identify capable, knowledgeable, and credible candidates with:

Proven football or sports-administration competence
Ethical leadership standards
The time, independence, and capacity to revamp the JFF
This process must prioritize expertise over convenience or familiarity.

Step 2: Leadership Transition

Clearly identify and legally execute the steps required to extricate the current leadership and implement a transparent transition process that aligns with:

JFF statutes
FIFA governance standards
Jamaican law and best practice
This step must be firm, lawful, and decisive.

Step 3: Comprehensive JFF Audit

Upon successful transition, conduct a full audit of the JFF covering:

Operational effectiveness
Financial governance and transparency
Technical football structures
Technological capability and data infrastructure
The findings must be:

Clearly communicated
Publicly accountable
Directly linked to measurable improvement plans

Step 4: National Coaching & Development System

Develop and nationalize a coaching and instruction framework that:

Prioritizes player development over short-term results
Emphasizes continuous improvement
Aligns youth, school, community, semi‑professional, and professional pathways
Reflects Jamaican athletic identity while meeting global standards
This is how we protect talent.

Step 5: A Living National Football Database

Create and maintain a working, centralized database of verified talent, including:

Players (local and diaspora)
Coaches
Referees
Sports science, medical, and performance professionals
This database must include individuals who are:

Proven at the highest possible levels
Willing to contribute to Jamaican football development
Properly evaluated, tracked, and deployed
