Permanently Abolish Slavery and Involuntary Servitude in New Jersey

The Issue

End Slavery NJ: A Call to Abolish the Last Vestiges of Slavery in Our Constitution

We stand at a pivotal moment in the fight for true justice and human rights in New Jersey. Despite significant progress, the root of systemic injustice remains embedded in our constitution, perpetuating the legacy of slavery. We cannot truly reform our justice system without first eradicating this deeply rooted injustice. This is why we, at End Slavery NJ, are calling on all New Jersey residents to support ACR 137 and SCR 12—bills that aim to amend our state constitution to unequivocally abolish slavery in all forms.

The Bills:
ACR 137: Sponsored by Assembly Members Shavonda Sumter, Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, and Benjie Wimberly, this bill is currently under review by the State and Local Government Committee.
SCR 12: Sponsored by Senators Brian Stack and Shirley Turner, this bill is under the jurisdiction of the State Government, Wagering, Tourism, and Historic Preservation Committee.

Both bills propose a constitutional referendum to remove any exceptions for slavery, ensuring that no person can be subjected to involuntary servitude under any circumstances in New Jersey. This is a crucial step towards dismantling the remnants of systemic racism and ending mass incarceration, which disproportionately impacts communities of color.

Why It Matters:
The abolition of slavery in our constitution is more than a symbolic gesture—it is a necessary action to align our laws with our values of equality and justice. The exception clause in our current constitution has been used to justify exploitative practices, particularly in our prison system. By closing this loophole, we move closer to a fair and just society.

Our Call to Action:
We urge you to join us in this critical movement. Sign this petition to show your support for ACR 137 and SCR 12. Let our legislators know that the people of New Jersey demand justice and the complete abolition of slavery in our constitution.

Together, we can make history and set a precedent for other states to follow.
