Emergency Lights for NB Volunteer Firefighters

Emergency Lights for NB Volunteer Firefighters
The Issue
In New Brunswick there are approximately 5500 firefighters and the majority are volunteers; they are from all walks of life, from all different backgrounds and all with one main thing in common, a dedication to the people and property of their community to protect them from fire and other emergencies.
At any given time, day or night we are called upon to help others in our community on their worst day. We are tasked with responding from work, home, family events and many other day to day outings. Some of us respond to the Fire Hall to pick up gear and the appropriate apparatus needed for the specific call and others will go directly to the emergency scene depending on how close they are to the location.
Currently we have no way to notify the general public driving our local roads and highways that we are in fact responding to some sort of emergency. Most of us will use our vehicles standard four way flashers, but rarely do people even notice. We feel that with the proper training and strict accountability for members and awareness for the people in our community having a dedicated colored light in the windshields of our personal vehicles would be of benefit not only for the safety of our members but the public as well.
Five Provinces throughout Canada allow their volunteer firefighters, and EMS personnel respond to their department and emergency scenes using green flashing courtesy lights. These lights do NOT let us break traffic laws or speed. It’s simply just a "request" for the right of way.
Currently in New Brunswick the “Green” light has been designated for Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) only. We believe that it would be best to share this designation as “Green” is the usual color being used by Canadian and some US departments. In fact many city departments in other provinces have even incorporated green light on their fire apparatus to help with rural awareness.
If you feel that our local Firefighters and communities would benefit from this, please support this petition to help get our ideas heard, we need all the help we can get when seconds count.
Thank you
