Never Again: Require Runway-End Cameras for Safer Skies

Never Again: Require Runway-End Cameras for Safer Skies
The Issue
On June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, took off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Just moments after liftoff, the aircraft crashed into a nearby hostel building, resulting in the tragic loss of 241 lives. The cause of this catastrophic accident is still under investigation. Perhaps delaying the investigation is the lack of runway cameras—critical technology that could have helped fill in the gaps of this tragedy. More than 1,100 Boeing 787s operate worldwide, yet there are no answers. Without visual evidence, accident reports will still take months. Change needs to happen today.
The absence of visual footage is not just a missed opportunity—it’s a dangerous gap in aviation safety worldwide. Runway-end cameras could provide vital real-time information for air traffic controllers, help emergency responders act faster, and give investigators clear evidence to understand exactly what went wrong.
This is about more than technology—it’s about accountability, transparency, and respect for the lives lost and those who fly every day. Families deserve answers, the aviation community deserves better tools, and passengers deserve safer skies.
The technology to install high-definition cameras at runways is already available, affordable, and proven in other industries like traffic monitoring and sports. Yet airports around the world lag in adopting this simple but powerful safety measure.
I am a high school student and aviation enthusiast, deeply committed to advancing safety in the skies. I urge the FAA, ICAO, DGCA India, and all airport authorities worldwide to make runway-end camera installation mandatory at all commercial airports.
Together, we can prevent future tragedies, improve the quality of investigations, and save lives. Please join me in calling for this crucial step forward—because every family deserves closure.
