March is the month we celebrate the International Working Women's Day. It is fortuitous that this is the month when our petition to Network 18 for gender sensitive reporting has finally seen victory! I feel extremely moved and grateful in sharing that in under two months, 47,000 of you stood staunchly behind this cause. I want to extend my sincere thanks to every single person working in different sectors who signed and shared this petition in their networks, and explained to their friends, family and colleagues how the issue is relevant to all of us. I am indebted to all the national and global journalists and media platforms who lent their voice to this campaign, to the organisations working on gender equality who carried this conversation forward, to publications and forums that invited me to write, speak, discuss and debate on issues related to gender sensitive reporting.   A ton of thanks to Network 18 for assuring us that it "has removed all stock images from its database that portray victims and survivors of sexual violence as helpless, timid, scared, muffled, crouching and overshadowed. These have been replaced with standard, neutral images". They have also let their team "know how to use images while reporting on sexual violence". This is an extremely welcome and encouraging move and let us hope that the lead Network 18 has taken is followed by every media house that continues to use such images. I had written in my petition that this is an issue extremely personal to me. All 47,000 of you have proved that the personal is indeed political and that nobody who dreams of a gender equal society has cause to feel they are alone. Cheers to all of us!
