Update from Solidary for Dr. KC Alliance: Tues. 26 July • Lok Man Singh Karki and the seven other commissioners of the CIAA did not show up at the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee for Good Governance and Monitoring to which they had been summoned for questioning. In a note sent to explain his absence, Karki was said to have a throat ache and to have been instructed by his doctor not to speak for a week. No reason was given for the absence of the seven other commissioners. This action by Lok Man Singh Karki his fellow commissioners represents contempt of parliament. In the absence of hard proof of Karki’s illness and a clear and legitimate accounting for the absence of the other commissioners, such an undermining of an elected national legislature calls for disciplinary action. • The Committee on Good Governance and Monitoring proceeded with the formation of a five-member subcommittee to investigate the CIAA’s interference in Kathmandu University’s medical entrance examinations. Lok Man Singh Karki's acts of corrupt interference in the medical sector are many and well-documented. The limitation of the subcommittee’s investigation to this one act of overreach on the part of the CIAA represents a disregard of the breadth of the complaints against Lok Man Singh Karki for which Dr. KC demanded his impeachment. As such it does not represent due process as a response to the motion tabled by MPs Gagan Thapa, Dhanaraj Gurung, and Shyam Shrestha on 21 July. • The members of the subcommittee formed to investigate the CIAA’s interference in the Kathmandu University medical entrance examinations are Padmanarayan Chaudhary, Udaya Nepali Shrestha, Narshing Chaudhari, Milan Rajbanshi, and Janakraj Joshi. Maoist MP Janakraj Joshi, who has taken an active role in the subcommittee, is a known supporter of Lok Man Singh Karki. • On Tuesday, the day after Dr. KC broke his fast, the shareholders of the cooperatively owned medical college Manmohan Pratishthan broke their agreement with him by announcing that they had no intention to sell to the government. One of Dr. KC’s demands had been to revoke the bill that had allowed for the creation of this cooperative medical college in which 146 parliamentarians have a share. While the revoking of the bill was not acceded to, a compromise had been reached by which the college would be sold to the National Academy of Medical Sciences. On Saturday, 30 July, a Walk with Dr. KC rally will be held in which many will accompany Dr. KC as he walks to Singha Durbar and submits before the Good Governance and Monitoring Committee a file of documentation of Lok Man Singh Karki’s many illegitimate and corrupt interferences in the medical and medical education sector. Copies of this file will be given to all 498 parliamentarians. The limitation of the investigation of Karki to his interference in the KU medical exams represents a failure of due process and an effort to give Karki a clean chit. -- Spread the word and join the rally!
