Hello again Memphis Lit Lovers,
My time as petition head is coming to an end as Emmett will be returning tomorrow, so I want to take this time to share some parting words for all of as we move forward with our campaign.
Today, I attended the Woman's March through downtown, and I saw 9,000 men and women marching and working hard to make change in the world. It was a truly inspiring sight to see so many people coming together for a cause, no matter what that may be. Now, I don't want to equate the fight for Booksellers with the march, as they take place on vastly different scales, but valuable lessons can be applied from the rally today.
The smallest movement can spark change. As people, we can't always do everything, but when we rally together behind a cause, the numbers add up. It becomes harder for people to turn away when the voices grow louder and louder, and Memphis, that is what you have done with this petition. You have taken the dream of kids who wanted to save a local bookstore, and launched it into the stratosphere. We have been shared on almost every major local media in Memphis, passed around on Facebook, and amassed a remarkable following of nearly 3,000 people who are all working toward the same goal. And that is the true essence of our voice as a whole.
No matter what your personal beliefs or politics may be, we can always take lessons from those around us. As we move on, remember that you hold the ability to make change. Go create a petition; go march with friends; even go buy a book and enjoy the atmosphere of a local establishment. The difference you see could start to surprise you.
For now, this is your interim petition leader signing off, and I'd like to leave you with words from one of my favorite musicals, Matilda the Musical.
"Even if you're little, you can do a lot, you musn't let a little thing like little stop you. If you sit around and let them get on top, you might as well be saying you think that it's okay, and that's not right."
