NEED FOR REFERENDUM ON IMMIGRATION MARCH 2024

The Issue

Petition for a Referendum on the 2024 New Pact on Migration and Asylum of the EU in Ireland!

Dear Citizens of Ireland,

I hope this letter finds you well. We, the undersigned, express our deep concern and urgent request for a referendum on immigration in March 2024, alongside the two referenda removing marriage and women from the constitution.  In December of  2023, a New Pact on Migration and Asylum was agreed upon by the European Union, negotiated on Ireland's behalf by Fine Gael Minister Helen McEntee. The proposed pact has significant implications for Ireland, particularly in terms of asylum seekers and the allocation of refugees among European Union member states.

One of the major issues we wish to address is the disproportionate burden that Ireland is likely to bear due to the criteria used for distributing asylum seekers, namely nominal GDP. We believe that this approach fails to account for Ireland's unique economic situation, characterized by the so-called "Leprechaun economics" as coined by Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman. Ireland's GDP is artificially inflated by more than 50% due to its status as a notable tax haven, with a considerable portion of the economic activity not contributing to the well-being of the Irish populace.

Minister for Integration of Immigrants, Roderick O'Gorman, has estimated that, under the proposed pact, Ireland could see a permanent increase in asylum seekers to an average of 10-15 thousand annually, totaling 150,000 over ten years, with a strong likelihood that this number will increase significantly from this initial figure, as family members and spouses of the above population receive visas via current family migration rules. This projection raises concerns about the strain on resources, infrastructure, and the potential impact on the well-being of both asylum seekers and the existing population, particularly in light of the worsening housing crisis.

Furthermore, public opinion, as reflected in numerous opinion polls, consistently shows that 70-75% of Irish people believe that current levels of immigration are too high. Many Irish citizens express reservations about the legitimacy of asylum claims from countries widely regarded as "safe" under international law, such as Algeria, Georgia, Nigeria, India, and Pakistan.

Given these concerns, we emphasize the necessity of a referendum on the 2024 New Pact on Migration and Asylum. In the past, the Irish public has been afforded the opportunity to vote on critical EU treaties, such as the Lisbon Treaty. To deny a referendum on legislation of such magnitude sets a perilous precedent for Irish law and political culture, particularly concerning future treaties emanating from Brussels.

Finally, in a recent interview on Virgin Media, Minister Neale Richmond's acknowledged that the main intent of the upcoming referenda to redefine family as a "durable relationship" in the March 2024  is to massively expand the number of people eligible for family reunification visas, to those with no blood or legal ties to the initial immigrants, such as boyfriends, stepparents, in-laws, etc . This redefinition will substantially increase the number of family members eligible for visas through chain/family migration. It is imperative that the Irish people have the opportunity to voice their opinion on decisions with such far-reaching consequences for their country, in adherence to the principles of democracy.

We, the undersigned, urge you to consider this petition seriously and take immediate action to facilitate a referendum on the 2024 New Pact on Migration and Asylum in Ireland. We believe in the importance of democratic principles and the fundamental right of the Irish people to have a say in decisions that significantly impact the nation's future.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

IRISH FREEDOM PARTY.
