NCAA 5-in-5 Rule Must Include Class of 2022: Only 4 Years Post High School, Yet Left Out

The Issue

We call on the NCAA to amend its proposed “5-in-5” eligibility rule to include student-athletes from the high school class of 2022.

The class of 2022 is the only group impacted by COVID-era disruptions that is now being left out of NCAA eligibility reform.

This group experienced unprecedented disruption during the COVID-19 pandemic. Opportunities were limited, and these athletes were required to compete against older players who were granted extended eligibility, creating a clear competitive imbalance.

Now, as the NCAA considers reforms intended to support student-athletes, the class of 2022 is being excluded, despite being only four years removed from high school graduation and among the most affected by pandemic-related disruptions.

We respectfully request that the NCAA include the class of 2022 in the “5-in-5” rule.

Student-athletes deserve equitable treatment, especially those who have already navigated extraordinary challenges beyond their control.

We urge the NCAA to act in the spirit of fairness, consistency, and opportunity for all.
