NC Laws are Killing Natural Hair Health: Let Us Trim!

NC Laws are Killing Natural Hair Health: Let Us Trim!
The Issue
Imagine sitting in a specialist’s chair, finally finding someone you trust with your crown, only to be told: "I see the damage, but the law won't let me fix it."
In North Carolina, your Licensed Natural Hair Care Specialist is LEGALLY BANNED from:
✂️ Trimming even a 1/2 inch of a split end.
✂️ Removing a heavy, thinning "bulb" from a loc.
✂️ Using flexi-rods and rollers for non-thermal styling.
Why the Law is Broken:
- The Contradiction: State textbooks call maintenance trimming the "next step for healthy hair," yet the law makes it illegal for us to follow that standard.
- The Texture Gap: General cosmetologists have 1,500 hours of training, but almost none of those hours are dedicated to kinky, curly, or loc’d hair. You are forced to leave a specialist you trust for a generalist who may not understand your hair texture.
- The Income Gap: This law drains money from Black-owned small businesses by forbidding them from providing a complete, healthy service.
The Solution:
We are demanding that the NC Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners modernize these outdated rules:
- The 1" Rule: Update the "Natural Hair Care" scope to include a 1-inch maintenance trim for hair health.
- The 25-50 Hour Bridge: Create a safety/sanitation module so specialists can be certified to trim without a full 1,500-hour degree.
- Required Texture Training: Mandate that all NC cosmetology licenses include dedicated hours for Type 3 and Type 4 hair—so no client is left behind.
WE ARE THE NHCC. We are demanding a Safety Bridging Course, so your specialist can finally FINISH THE WORK.
No more incomplete services.
No more hair trauma from untrained hands.
No more paying double.
Trimming" is a health requirement for hair maintenance, not just a "styling choice."
Natural Hair Health is a Right, Not a Luxury. Sign now to tell the NC Board: "Let our specialists protect our hair!"
