Save Tilbury Power Station: A valuable habitat for rare and endangered species

The Issue

  • A 'brownfield site' is land that has been previously built upon, in comparison with a ‘greenfield site’ which has not. These areas have been abandoned from their previous uses, which may have been for residential, commercial or industrial purposes.
  • The lack of nutrients in the soil allows many primary successional species to occupy brownfield sites. The composition of different habitats found there provides refuge for a variety of important and endangered or threatened species that depend on these sites to support their complex life cycles.
  • One of the largest regeneration projects in Europe is happening outside London, on over 3150 hectares of brownfield land.
This petition aims show the publics support towards preventing the planned development on Tilbury Power Station.

Some of the rare and endangered species known to exist in Tilbury Power Station include:

The Shrill Carder Bee (Bombus sylvarum)
The Brown-banded carder bee (Bombus humilis)
The Sea aster mining bee (Colletes halophilus)
The Five-banded weevil-wasp (Cerceris quinquefasciata)
The Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros)
The Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus)
These species are considered to be threatened, rare or endangered.

If the development goes ahead, this precious brownfield land will be lost, which provides a habitat for some of the only population strongholds of these species in the UK.

Please sign to ensure that the fate of this site is reconsidered!
