Hello all,
What an amazing 24 hours it has been!
Not only has our campaign been in several national newspapers, there has been coverage of this story on the radio and online. All of this has meant that the petition continues to grow. We should pass 20,000 signatures very soon which is, quite frankly, unbelievable!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, thank you so so much for all of your support, your comments and sharing this petition about online. Every single signature is important in putting pressure on the HSE to realise that their recommendations were fundamentally wrong.
The emphasis, now that the cattle have had to be sold or slaughtered, is to get several points across to the powers that be and the wider public. Obviously we want to see Highland cattle back on Baslow Edge for the benefit of the farmer, the environment, tourism and for the public to enjoy once again.
However, I think this case has also proved that there still needs much more publicity around the safe use of walking dogs near cattle as well as the wider issues concerning the use of cattle on public access land vs the HSE. Something that could potentially impact hundreds of farmers across the country.
I would also like to see much more involvement from the likes of the NFU, the National Trust, the Wildlife Trust and Natural England in promoting and supporting the environment and the wider farming community on this issue. Their involvement is noticeable by their very silence on this matter.
Finally, I'd like to pass on my particular thanks to an award-winning Peak District photographer, Villager Jim, who has helped substantially with organising, promoting and being responsible for much of the media coverage over the last day or so. His involvement, including his own campaign to get the HSE to reverse their decision, has helped enormously.
There's no doubt about it, this petition has become a thorn in the side of the HSE due to the huge amount of negative publicity this case has generated. That has been down to you. Every single one of you. Thank you again!
I will, of course, keep you updated of any new developments as and when I get them.
Justin
