Ban Cruel Chicken Cages in Canada

The Issue

Are your tax dollars used to support animal abuse?

Right now, the taxpayer-funded National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) is asking for public comment on its new code of practice for the care and handling of egg-laying hens. The new code allows millions of birds to be crammed in cruel cages for nearly their entire lives.

In cages, hens are denied nearly everything that comes naturally to them. They never get to see the sun, breathe fresh air, exercise, or feel the grass beneath their feet. From the day they hatch until they are violently killed, the birds experience constant misery. Mercy For Animals’ recent undercover investigation at Gray Ridge Egg Farms, one of the largest egg factory farms in Canada, reveals just how cruel caging egg-laying hens is.

We cannot let NFACC get away with using our taxpayer dollars to support animal abuse that the majority of Canadians oppose.

With the help of veterinarians and animal welfare experts, MFA has prepared a response to help protect birds from the worst forms of institutionalized animal abuse. Please sign the petition to join us in our call for the following:

  • a ban on inherently cruel cages for egg laying hens
  • more space, clean litter, access to natural light, and environmental enrichments for birds
  • a zero tolerance policy for animal abuse and installation of video monitoring systems to deter egregious acts of violence
  • an end to the needless mutilation of hens without painkillers

Every single Canadian signature is critical!

Your signature will be submitted along with thousands of others in MFA’s official response to the new NFACC code of practice.

Together, we can show NFACC that the majority of Canadians oppose confining animals in small cages for their entire lives. Please sign the petition now and then share it on social media to protect Canada’s egg-laying hens from terrible abuse!

Thank you.
