Petition updateRemove Sexual Harassers from National Academy of SciencesDonors Need to Know NAS Is Corrupt and Members Sexually Harass Women in Science

This week has shown us two things -
One, academics CAN effect important change for women and they can do it fast. Second, the NAS is deeply corrupt and people giving them money need to know.
Good news came earlier this week when the dreaded and sexist chili pepper 'hotness' rating was removed from RateMyProf thanks to your help. It took only three days and a bunch of tweets to get this student resource to remove the creepy ability of students to comment on if they found professors hot.
The second thing we have learned is that the National Academy of Sciences is even more deeply corrupt than we previously knew. Science magazine shared lured stories of NAS member Francisco Ayala who harassed, retaliated, groped and intimidated women for decades. He also revealed how the 'good old boys' network at NAS REALLYworks.
From Science Ayala told a woman "he had nominated for membership in the prestigious National Academy of Sciences (NAS), how blacklisting of nominees was typically carried out—comments that she took as a veiled threat to blacklist her nomination. Ayala is a NAS member and only members can nominate—and vote on—new members"
NAS President Marcia McNutt knew all of this of course, when she told thousands who watched the NAS panel discussion of sexual harassment of women earlier this week that no nominee could get passed the vetting process because members would know if they harassed women. Bear in mind, the average age of a member in NAS is 72 years old and 80% of them are white men. Does anyone really think they are capable of making this call with six known harassers and countless others cowering in fear they might be outed?
Insider 'vetting' doesn't work, Marcia. Transparency works. Letters from every member's home institution saying they have not violated Title IX will work
We demand better. We demand you get letters from a place where their misdeeds occurred. Anything less is willfully ignorant, insulting and actively harming women in science.
If you won't listen to the 4,000 scientists who have demanded this for weeks, maybe you will listen to your donors? When people give graciously to the sciences, the need to know you don't represent us in science. McNutt's feeble and thoughtless leadership on addressing sexual harassment is unacceptable and we deserve better.
Find a donor from this list from the NAS Treasures Report, tag them on the socials with #MeTooSTEM and share why NAS doesn't represent the interests of women in academics.
