The last two weeks have gotten us a lot of publicity, wins from unexpected sources (bye, bye RateMyProf sexist chili pepper!) and new advocates. We need to use this momentum right this minute. We need your help to launch our next campaign calling on the world's largest scientific society to stop bestowing honors on known sexual harassers.
Today we released a petition calling on American Association for the Advancement of Science to stop giving awards to men who have abused women. AAAS bestows its highest privilege to elected Fellows whose "meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications".
And yet, some AAAS Fellows have been found guilty of using their faculty status to sexually harass, physically assault and ostracize women from science. You can find the publicly available information on people in academia found guilty of sexual assault, harassment and retaliation and here. And yes, some are 'honored' as AAAS Fellows https://geocognitionresearchlaboratory.wordpress.com/2016/02/03/not-a-fluke-that-case-of-sexual-harassment-is-not-an-isolated-incident/ Make no mistake, these are NOT meritorious individuals. They are criminals and #TimesUp.
I'm going to be upfront. This one is personal. I've heard from too many advisors about students struggling to be heard in cases against prestigious AAAS Fellows and award winners who assaulted, raped, and retaliated against them. For all that I've heard, I know there are still countless women who look at the accolades we shower on men whose behavior was hidden. These men (and, yes, maybe some women) diminished and destroyed people's careers. This breaks my heart.
I believe that this campaign is an essential next step to ask more of ourselves and our colleagues. To not accept the status quo. Let's bring predators to light and force scientific societies to honor only those who are honorable.
As passionate as I am about this, I also know this campaign will go no where without you. I need you to share this. And, let's face it, it sucks to be the person who is harping on it. But you know what sucks more? Being the person that lets this happen to another generation of women.
I need you to send it to your friends. Post it on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Heck, put it on MySpace if that's your thing. Put it on department bulletin boards. In the past month, scientists and science advocates have shown they care. They just need to know how to help. This is how.
We need your help this week to get the best possible launch for our new campaign to push AAAS to oust Fellows found guilty of sexual misconduct and ensure new Fellows have no record of sexually harassing, assaulting or retaliating against women (or men) in science.
When you sign, please add a comment on why you are signing. Reporters are looking for quotes from all kinds of people and this really helped with pushing NAS to get serious about their tolerance of horrible behavior. Please use social media to amplify your endorsement with the #MeTooSTEM or #TimesUpAAAS hashtag and share the posts of others so we can continue to hold a shining light on those who have hurt too many women already.
Thank you. I am so very grateful for each of you. Your voices, your advocacy, your sharing this campaign are going to make science better for all of us very soon.
