Aggiornamento sulla petizioneSupport for a Viable Revitalization Plan for DEM leased land in Galilee, RIComments from Supporters of this Petition - Let's Continue to Fight to Save Galilee

The above photo was from a demonstration that was held last summer in Galilee to protest the gross mismanagement of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management where they have allowed greedy corporations use valuable land as street level parking lots, and they allowed Procaccianti and Paolino to purposely abandon their hotel and thereby creating an environmental, health, and an economic hardship for all those who work, own businesses, visit, and live in Galilee and the surrounding areas.

We as a State and our Town lose hundreds of thousands of dollars every year by the State and the Town not being able to create a mixed-use development and by the State and the Town not operating a parking garage.     It makes absolutely no sense to allow private developers operate parking lots on State leased land for their gain and our loss.   Let's hope our elected officials will stop this gross abuse of power.    Let us hope the Town of Narragansett's Town Council will take the needed steps to stop the RIDEM's gross negligence by the RIDEM failing in their fiduciary duty to make the best use of the land that they are controlling in Galilee.

Below are some comments from some of the supporters of this petition.   Included are some comments from commercial fishermen and their family members.    We must continue with our fight to save Galilee.   If at least one person who has signed this petition can reach out to one family member or friend to provide their virtual signature to this petition, it will increase our number of signatures significantly.

With the URI Resiliency Studies that support a mixed-use sustainable development for Galilee, and with money available in the State of Rhode Island to support infrastructure improvements we must continue with our fight to Save Galilee from becoming a street level parking lot.   Our Governor told us the State has 46 million to improve Galilee.   Our Town has a 25 million bond to improve the infrastructure of parts of Narragansett.  Our State of RI has a 600-million-dollar surplus in money just waiting to be spent on various ways to benefit the State of Rhode Island.   Let's hope the above money is not put into greedy contractors' pockets and / or becomes unaccountable.   I hope you find many of the below comments of support of interest.    Thank you to all who took the time to write valuable comments.   Let us hope the State of Rhode Island and the Narragansett Town Council will not ignore the will of the people in favor of greedy corporations.    Procaccianti and Paolino would make all of Galilee a paved parking lot for their gain and Narragansett's loss if they had their way.   And the RIDEM would give them their Blessings if the pressure was not kept on the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

Thank you all for your signatures and your support for Galilee.   I wish you all the best this New Year.   May the year 2023 be the year our Narragansett Town Council takes the needed action to save Galilee.

I believe the ideas brought forth in the Resiliency Study are much more beneficial to Galilee and the State of Rhode Island than a giant street-level flood prone parking lot, and so much more physically attractive. Financial benefits would be spread between many entities and that money would be reused in the community in many ways rather than disappearing into a big corporate pocket which could then finance more, similar projects elsewhere. A museum draws visitors; affordable housing draws increased residency in Galilee adding another dimension to life in Galilee, possibly citizens with a vested interest in the community; improved infrastructure helps protect the community in these times of climate change. Parking at Roger Wheeler Beach is an adjustment people would soon get used to and would replace an unattractive wasteful use of land in Galilee.

My husband owns a dragger in Galilee and the place is a dump. Certainly not the representation of a fishing port we would like to present. The RIDEM has done a poor job managing the property, and I have concerns around that. The power to my husband’s dock is constantly going out, not to mention the mismanagement of fishing regulations. The escape road is no escape, just a road to hell.

This is the original heartbeat of Narragansett, it’s a site for sore eyes currently and a parking lot would be even worse. A proposal should be put forward to build something out community would be proud of!

James Flynn·

It’s time for change and start taking care of Narragansett and create a development the general public will be proud of and stop using the village as nothing more than a parking lot

Randal Beal·

I'm a commercial fisherman and l come to Pt Judith from Massachusetts, no more parking lots.   Small businesses would be better with a mixed-use development as there's only a few restaurants and shops.  We need to consider the needs of the fishermen too as they are the ones who truly make Galilee great.

Alex Brown·

I am a commercial fisherman out at Point Judith, and I don’t want to see it turn into a massive parking lot!

Donna Peterson·

I am from a lobstering family. I grew up on Great Island in the 60's. We DO NOT NEED MORE PARKING. We need to support our local fishing community. The only thing that stinks is the PRI X group proposal. The RIDEM needs to listen to the people & not renew their lease.

Janet Winterroth

Because I live on Great Island, and I am interested in improving and preserving the area as one of the last commercial fishing ports on the east coast, and I also support tourist attractions in Galilee.

David Simeone

Galilee deserves better than making more parking so companies can profit. How about the fisherman who work there and have more amenities to encourage visitors to stay in Galilee rather than someone's stopping grounds destination to go to Block Island only to pay for parking?   Galilee is a fishing port first and foremost. People like me go there for the scenery and for a mixed-use development that will encourage people to stay in Galilee.

Please stop the paving of Galilee!
The area is too vital to our natural resources to ignore, and the Narragansett town’s proposal brings support to many not just the few greedy group that neglected their lease obligations already.

 Holly Buchanan

Do not reinstate the lease. Cut ties with a developer that clearly is only looking after their own interests and not the interest of the community not our history!! Revitalization is the answer!! Not a huge parking lot. There are many different acceptable and preferred parking lot alternatives!! Don’t ruin this special area!! Engage with a few different developers and see which has the best suggestions and plans!! This, after consulting with the people in the community!! They deserve input, transparency, and a voice in what is to transpire!! Listen to their suggestions and concerns, and let the few developers be made aware, so they can take that into consideration with their suggestions and planning!! When all the proposals are in make them public and then hold two or three public meetings for the community to comment, voice opinions: concerns or support!! They will feel heard and treated fairly!! That way everyone will have an opportunity to be included and will result in a much more satisfactory outcome for all!!

Veronica McCartney

I'm also a Narragansett resident and would like to see Revitalization Plan for Galilee.
